Lettering Process

One of my favorite things about hand lettering is getting to see it progress from an idea in my head to a finished piece of artwork.  I love looking at the transformation!  When I'm working on a new design, it often takes several hours to complete.  I usually start with a rough sketch on scrap paper, and then start drawing guidelines in pencil.   I draw the entire thing out in pencil first, and then outline it with Micron pens.  They're really reliable, and having multiple sizes makes my life a whole lot easier! Once everything is outlined, I carefully fill it in (with pen, this can take a REALLY long time), and touch up the edges with a super fine pen.  Then I erase all the guidelines!  Here's some examples of pieces as they progress:
